Author: Carly Anne West
Everyone thinks Sophie’s sister, Nell, went crazy. After all, she heard strange voices that drove her to commit suicide. But Sophie doesn’t believe that Nell would take her own life, and she’s convinced that Nell’s doctor knows more than he’s letting on.
As Sophie starts to piece together Nell’s last days, every lead ends in a web of lies. And the deeper Sophie digs, the more danger she’s in—because now she’s hearing the same haunting whispers. Sophie’s starting to think she’s going crazy too. Or worse, that maybe she’s not….
REVIEW
The cover is so creepy. I was quite scared even before starting the book. It kind of warns you that you are in for a terrifying ride. The book starts of really well. It's dark and mysterious.
Sophie is hearing a whisper, a voice, a murmur and seeing a vision in her mirror and that's scaring her because (apart from the obvious reason) this is what happened with her sister, this is why she was sent to a mental faculty, from where she ran off and later her body was found hanging upside down from a tree. Yeah, that's scary.
Evan is the only boy in school who doesn't consider Sophie as a freak. He is interested in her and takes her out on a date. He tells her about his cousin who had the same condition as Nell. The doctors called it schizophrenia but there is more to it than the people are telling her and Sophie needs to find out the truth.
Sophie and Evan's meeting was far too easy. I would have found it more real if she met Evan in the faculty or while doing her investigation. Meeting a guy in school who happened to have a cousin with the same condition is just too convenient. It bothered me. But anyhow, I really liked Evan. He is cute and shy and awkward. The romance was not very convincing though. It was too fast.
The story is not as creepy and scary as I expected it to be. It could have been better. It takes a lot of time to get into the stuff that the cover promises.

Good review. Thanks for participating.
ReplyDeleteyou are not the only person who said that they expected it to be creepy but it wasn't that creepy in the end. I am not a fan of convenient occurrences. Great review!

I have been wondering about this book. I think the cover is creepy to. Thanks for the great review.
ReplyDeleteI really appreciate your honest reviews, giving readers a heads-up about what you didn't like so much about the book in addition to what you did. Good constructive criticism! I'm definitely still interested in reading it myself. LOVE the cover - I remember hearing about this book and seeing the cover reveal a while back and being intrigued. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteIt's too bad that this wasn't as creepy as the cover, but I rarely find YA books that scary to start with, so it's not that much of a disappointment. And hey- maybe I'll feel differently now that i know not to expect super-scary :)
