REVIEW:
Naomi's life changed after the kidnapping. She is now seeing a therapist, her grades are falling, Jesse is on parole and she kissed another boy, Finn. All this is making her confused about her life and what she wants out of it.
“... Other students lived on campus and got drunk at parties. Other students dated and graduated and got married and led normal lives. She wanted to marry an ex-con and pretend being kidnapped had been a normal thing she could forget about. ...”
I was never comfortable with the idea of Naomi and Jesse. He kidnapped her and that fact just never left my mind. I think Jesse made the right choice by turning himself in and I'm glad that he tries to change his ways but I still wanted Naomi to "move on" with life. Finn made her happy, he listened when she talked and he never judged her. He was good for her.
I think the author has done a great job is tapping into the emotions of a girl so confused and scared. It's realistic and even though I don't agree with most of Naomi's decisions I think the author has managed to stay true to her. I was hoping that Naomi will finally break free from her past and start living again on her own terms.
I was so invested in her life. It's hard to connect to Naomi, it requires some patience to understand her. She has a passive personality and rarely takes a stand. Sometimes that exasperated me. I thought she would leave Jesse after the Nightclub thing. But the good thing is that she tries to change, she grows through the novel. She understands herself and finally takes a stand.
All the characters are very well developed and the book is written really well. Definitely worth a read.
